Dragons, and skeletons, and ghosts—Oh my! In LEGO land, visitors will never know what they'll stumble across. LEGO Castles, an early LEGO theme, was created in 1978 and over the years knights and soldiers battled the forces of evil and protected their fortresses--LEGO castles. Other LEGO themes include Bionicle, Duplo, Dino, and Space. Since 1978, LEGOS has produced many LEGO castles.

The first LEGO castles theme was Classic Castle. This LEGOS theme lasted from 1978 to 1983. The most popular and well-known set of this theme was the 375 Castle. Also known as the Yellow Castle, it was first introduced in Europe, but made its way to the U.S. a few years later. The 375 Castle earned its nickname from the yellow bricks on the castle. The 779 pieces of the Yellow Castle include all the bricks and building pieces, plus the mini figures and their accessories. The 375 Castle was guarded by 6 soldiers, and there were also 4 teams of knights and soldiers. All the mini figures had their own armor, helmet visors, shields, and weapons. Stickers were used to decorate these pieces and came in 3 different color variations.

Since the early Yellow Castle and Classic Castle theme, there have been many other LEGO castles. Both Black Falcons and Crusaders were created from 1984-1992. The Crusaders debuted with King's Castle, one of the largest LEGO castles ever made. Forestmen and Black Knights were both introduced in 1987. Forestmen only until 1990, but reappeared in a sub theme called Dark Forest in 1996. Black Knights, on the other hand, was around until 1994. The mini figures in Black Knights changed from traditional LEGO faces to more detailed faces with mustaches and beards.

Other notable series include Wolfpack (1992-1993),  Dragon Masters(1993 and 1995),  Royal Knights (1995-1996),  and Fright Knights (1997-1998). Fright Knights was a spooky theme, with dragons, skeletons, bat lord/soldiers/knights, and a witch. Knight's Kingdom was introduced in 2000 and was so popular that Knight's Kingdom II hit the scene from 2004-2006.

The newest 2007 LEGO castles theme is called Castle. The mini figures are divided into good characters and evil characters. The good characters include The Good King, The Lead General, The Brave Knight, and The Princess. The evil characters are The Evil Wizard, The Black Skeleton, The Dragon, and The Evil Skeletons. So far, 6 scenes or sets have been introduced to tell the story of Castle. These sets illustrate the ferocious attacks and battles between the good and evil. In these sets, the opposing forces fight each other using axes, crossbows, flails, glaives, halberds, lances, magic wands, scythes, spears, swords, and war axes.

Although it may seem LEGOS are mainly targeted at kids, many adults are also captivated by the LEGO castles theme stories. In particular, some adults interested in medieval history enjoy collecting and building LEGO castles. Since LEGO castles have been around since 1978, many of the kids who grew up loving this LEGO theme have now continued to follow the LEGOS themes as adults. With such a strong following, it is unlikely that LEGO castles will be disappearing anytime soon.
