LEGOS: Bionicle Chronicles, Plastic Bricks, Science Fantasy And Toys
By:
Published: June 26, 2007
For the first time, in the late 1990s, LEGO suffered financially and even posted a loss. In 1997, the plastic brick company created Star Wars products and nearly pulled itself out of the red. However, because the company used the Star Wars logo, it had to pay Lucasfilm large royalties. People at LEGO realized that in order to make more money, they needed to create their own story.
In 1999, Bionicle Chronicles was born, and in 2001, the high-tech plastic bricks hit shelves in American stores.
Since then, the toys have generated huge success. Appealing mainly to boys between the ages of eight and 12, the Bionicle Chronicles story revolves around a science fantasy theme. The Bionicle Chronicles begin in the time before time in the ancient land of Mata Nui. The conflict centers on a great evil that has arisen and the six heroes that fight against it. These heroes are known as the Toa and their goal is to restore peace in the land by destroying the evil force.
Currently, many of the Bionicle Chronicles character sets are available to purchase at major toy stores. The six main heroes retail for about $8 and are generally the first figures that children buy. After that, the next most popular are Bohrok, the main enemies. The most expensive Bionicle Chronicles set is the remote-control Mana, which contains two figures that duel. Newer sets are usually sold at full price, but older sets can be found on clearance. The Bionicle Chronicles figures have ball-socket joints, for extra mobility and they come packaged in canisters. Instructions for assembly are available in the package and online.
In addition to the Bionicle Chronicles figurines, Scholastic has published four books based on the series. "Bionicle Chronicles," "Beware the Bohrok," "The Power Within," and "Tales of the Masks" describe the Toa, their acceptance of their powers, and their struggle to reach their destiny. Scholastic also publishes the ten book series "Bionicle Adventure" as well as Bionicle guides.
Also, Miramax is releasing a CGI film, "Bionicle: Mask of Light," straight to DVD and VHS. The movie portrays a hero overcoming danger and evil forces to fulfill his destiny. In addition to movies, there are also Bionicle Chronicles games and music that can be downloaded from the the official Bionicle Web site. The MP3 song, "Creeping in my soul" is from the Barraki mini-movie, and can be used as a ringtone.
