An evil presence has crept into the ancient land of Mata Nui, threatening the wellbeing of the biomechanical Matoran natives. Since the Great Spirit of the island had been lulled to sleep by his villainous brother, six Toa heroes had to be summoned to save the universe from impending ruin. So begins the science fantasy Bionicle, the first story created by Lego to foster a line of building sets.
Capitalizing on the popularity of these Lego creations, the Bionicle science fantasy has been made into a series of direct-to-video movies and Electronic Arts video games made for PS2, Xbox, PC, GameCube and Game Boy Advance. Such diverse characters, each one being a hybrid of organic and mechanical matter, lend to six levels of fascinating graphics and encounters for young audiences to explore. Bionicle gaming activities include flying, surfing, skiing and battling.
Bionicle adventures and characters are based on classical and Polynesian mythologies. Greg Farshtey has fleshed out their storyline in several book series and comics that have captivated fans around the world. The “Bionicle Chronicles” is the first book series to delineate the Lego Bionicle universe. Readers find the six Toa heroes being summoned to awaken the Great Spirit Mata Nui so he can save the island from his evil brother Makuta. Further adventures are also explored in issues 1-15 of the Bionicle comic book, the video game Lego Bionicle and the movie “Bionicle: Mask of Light.”
The second phase of the Bionicle epic is told in the book series “Bionicle Adventures.” Most of this second series takes place thousands of years before the first, as Greg Farshtey employs the use of flashbacks to tell how Mata Nui fell into the deep sleep that now held him captive. The plot line of the 10 books in the series is also comes through in issues 16 to 27 of the Bionicle comic book and the movies “Bionicle 2” and “Bionicle 3.”
“Bionicle Legends,” the third series about these Lego creations, finds a new group of Toa being recruited. This time they must find the Mask of Life in order to save the Great Spirit, and the universe with him, from imminent death. The Bionicle: Ignition comic books also tracks these events, and readers can breathe easy as there is more to come in the series in the years ahead. The suspense of these science fantasy page-turners are only half the fun of the Lego Bionicle world. Creating representations of these creatures and their weapons extend the fun. Fans can explore Bionicle Lego building sets, consider the product ratings for each set, check the price, and create a birthday or Christmas wish list. Amazon, eBay, NexTag, and BizRate always offer competitive prices for these popular toys. If, for some reason, building directions get lost or a used kit fails to provide them, step-by-step pictures can be found at Bionicle.lego.com.
Like other science fantasy traditions such as Warhammer, Final Fantasy and Dragonstar, the drama of the Bionicle universe can be quite addictive. Lucky for young fanatics, LEGO has made quite a range of products available to enjoy. Whether building Deker (the air-launching Po-Matoran hunter) or Nocturn (a brute skilled in deep sea combat), or fighting off the Makuya in a video game with friends and a bowl of popcorn, the adventure seems to have no end in sight.
